Rhythms of Spring A choral concert by the Surrey Hills Chamber Choir Celebrate the “Rhythms of Spring” with the award-winning Surrey Hills Chamber Choir on Saturday 30th March, 7.30pm at Holy Trinity Church, Bramley. As we approach Easter, and spring accelerates to the longer evenings of British Summer Time the very same weekend, we will will mark this moment of re-birth in the yearly calendar with a selection of popular choral delights. A concert held near Easter would not be complete without music relating to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus and the choir have chosen a selection of some of the best music from the “Easter” parts of Handel’s “Messiah” to re-tell this story.   Choruses from this much-loved oratorio include “Behold the Lamb of God”, “Surely he hath borne our griefs”, “Since by man came death”, “Worthy is the Lamb”, and the rousing “Amen” as well as the wonderful solo “The trumpet shall sound” for baritone and trumpet. The second half is filled with a delightful mix of songs of different styles, mood and tempo to ensure there is something for every musical taste.   Even from the writers of today there is diversity in mood, from the great dexterity of the fast moving “Rytmus” by Hrušovsky, the Spanish flavour of flamenco rhythms “With a lily in your hand” by Eric Whitacre, the mesmerising “Stars” by Ēriks Ešsenvalds, the beautiful “Underneath the Stars” by Kate Rusby and the majestic “Christus est Stella” by local composer Will Todd.  Also on the programme is some wonderful Mendelssohn, “Psalm 43”, and powerful Russian music in Schnittke’s “Gospodi”.  In complete contrast there are uplifting spirituals, traditional folk songs and the 1930s classic “These foolish Things”.   If you are unable to make this date, the choir will also be performing the same programme for St Nicolas Church, Cranleigh on Sunday 24th March at 3pm, where proceeds will go to church funds.   Tickets at £12 (adults) or £5 (children 16 and under) are available to purchase online, or email, or call 01483 892801 until 9pm the night before the performance. Any remaining tickets will be available on the door on the night. BUY TICKETS ONLINE
