Embrace the festive season and join the Surrey Hills choirs for a wonderful concert of traditional and contemporary songs and carols this Christmas.  The choirs will present two concerts, each with their own distinct character. Hosted by the Surrey Hills Chamber Choir with guest performers the Surrey Hills Singers, the Candlelit Concert will again be held in the stunning surroundings of St Nicolas Church, Guildford on Sunday 8th December at 8pm. The choirs will begin with a mixed selection of secular and sacred songs that includes:  the joyous and rhythmical composition by Christopher Tin of "Baba Yetu", which is the theme tune from Civilisation IV;  the very powerful "Priiditye poklonimsya" by Rachmaninoff;  and the stunning "Only in Sleep" by Esenvalds.  The Singers have another entertaining and diverse programme that includes: the beautiful Finnish folk song "On suuri sun rantas"; the challenging "White Winter Hymnal" with body percussion; the very moving "Days of Beauty" by Gjeilo; and, to round off their programme, a full routine with hats and canes of "Putting on the Ritz". Sung in the atmospheric setting of candlelit, our Christmas section begins with the French traditional carol "Sing we now of Christmas.  Other songs include the medieval carol "Gaudete", the traditional carols "Psallite Unigenito", "Away in a Manger", "Past three a clock", "The Sussex Carol" from Vaughan Williams' Fantasia, and "Joy to the World".  More recent carols that have become choral favourites - "The Lamb" by John Tavener and "Hymn to the Virgin" by Benjamin Britten - as well as more contemporary songs and carols "Lullay my liking", "O nata Lux" by Lauridsen, "Follow that Star" by Gritton and "The most wonderful time of the year" arranged by our own bass, Graham Webb.  Interspersed with our Christmas songs and carols will be audience carols. Tickets for the Candlelit concert are £12 for adults and £5 for under 16s and are available from our website at, by emailing or by calling 07768 982401. If you'd prefer a Christmas concert more suitable to attend with younger children, then please look at the details for our Family Christmas concert.  This will be held Sunday 8th December at 2pm at Cranleigh Village Hall
